Blunt Youth Radio runs audio workshop for youth climate activists

Blunt Youth Radio invites local high school aged youth to use the power of audio storytelling to advance their climate agenda.

WMPG’s Blunt Youth Radio program is launching a free, 6-week program to train high-school aged youth to use the tools of audio storytelling and journalism. The focus is on the issues of climate and the environment. Participants will leave the program with a finished audio piece that will air on WMPG and be part of the station’s youth podcast. The entire 6-weeks will be delivered live via Zoom.

In addition to meeting and working with other like-minded young people, this experience includes opportunities for extended one-on-one support as participants work on their individual audio projects. Participants will receive licenses for professional audio editing software, too!

Workshop members will meet audio producers who are on the cutting edge of reporting on climate issues, as well as a few of Maine’s science and policy-makers working to advocate for Maine’s climate agenda.

Participants will learn to conduct interviews, record audio remotely, and edit together their thoughts into finished audio segments. We will listen to a wide range of audio samples and talk about what makes a compelling and effective story around climate.  Learn to create a story that reinforces hope and offers a call to action to work/unite for a better future.

Blunt Youth Radio is a program of WMPG Community Radio, located on the Portland campus of the University of Southern Maine. Previous audio work from Blunt Youth Radio participants has aired on NPR, This American Life, and many stations around the USA through the Public Radio Exchange. This upcoming climate stories workshop is offered with the support of the Nature Conservancy in Maine.
