This summer, six interns from the Young People’s Caucus participated in an audio internship in partnership with Blunt Youth Radio and WMPG. Interns started out by participating in one of Blunt’s Intro to Audio-Making Workshops at the Portland Public Library, and then they came into WMPG regularly to record round-table conversations on topics including growing up in an ethnic household, representation in the media, and mental health. The result was the launch of the Unsealed Podcast!
On November 3rd and 4th, two of the YPC interns from the summer cohort led two hourlong workshops at the annual Maine Youth Action Network Leadership Conference in Orono, Maine. Ashanti and Feli shared how the group came from idea to episode, how strategic sharing can be an important tool for keeping your story safe, and how using audio was an outlet for the group’s open and honest conversations.
During the workshop, participants listened to an excerpt from Episode 1 of Unsealed and then broke into small groups to use the Unsealed planning process to plan an audio conversation of their own.
There were roughly 25 participants at each of the workshops, hailing from towns all over Maine including Hollis, Machias, and Bangor.
We are so excited to continue this partnership with the Young People’s Caucus. Right now they’re organizing more cohorts of youth leaders who will meet every other week to design, plan, and run a talk show hosted by and for Maine’s young people.
